Can I use a home theater as a speaker for my guitar amp?

Question by : Can I use a home theater as a speaker for my guitar amp?
My amp is only 15W and I’m planning on buying a 1000W home theater system, so can I plug a cable from the “headphones” jack of my amp to a home theater, and will it sound the same?

Best answer:

Answer by Kab
NO
They are built entirely different for two purposes. It will work and may even sound OK, but you will in the long run do damage to the home system.

Sorry I mis read your question.
I don’t know if it will damage the home system or not, but I would not take the chance.

My Acer X1161 Projector

When I was looking into buying a cheaper projector I couldn’t find many videos available. So this 5 minute sample video was taken from my couch about 4 metres away from the 120″ screen. My projector is an 0NZ Acer X1161 3D Ready 2500 Lumen SVGA Projector. This video is of it displaying standard Sky TV on the 120″ screen, not MySky HDi which would be even higher resolution. Also there was some quality loss from using our digital camera in the dark however this should help to show just how good these cheaper projectors can be for someone contemplating setting up a home theatre.

Q&A: how do projectors do HDTV?

Question by skatedrummer93: how do projectors do HDTV?
I’ve seen some with smaller resolutions like 800 by 600 online that claim they can do HDTV like the one here: http://reviews.cnet.com/InFocus_X1a_DLP_projector/4505-3180_7-30963909.html
I’m not saying that’s the only one and the question applies to any like that, but isn’t that too small for a normal HDTV outputting device? Will it actually work the way it’s supposed to? and also, do projectors like that have the ports needed to do it? thanks in advance.
oh, and please include what other inputs they usually come with if you know. thanks again
thanks, but will it at least work with HDTV?

Answer by Someguy
Their claim to do HDTV simply means they will accept a HDTV signal and display it at their smaller resolution. Those SD projectors are not HD and can not actually display at HD resolutions.

To get HD you need a projector with a resolution of 1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080p). The ports you want are either Component video which is analog HD, or better yet HDMI which is digital HD and is used by the PS3. All HD projectors will have one of these ports. 720p projectors start at $ 1000, such as the Optoma HD70 (DLP), while 1080p projectors start at under $ 4000, eg. Sony VPL-VW50 (SXRD). Happy projecting.

Reply:
The InFocus X1a in particular doesn’t have component input, only VGA (computer monitor cable). HDTV receivers use component instead so you’ll need a component-to-VGA adaptor. Also 800×600 is 4:3 not 16:9, so you will get black letterboxes from HDTV and end up with about 40% of the quality of basic HDTV (720p) and under 20% the quality of full HDTV. If budget is the most important factor then it might be adequate. If HDTV is important I would save up for 720p to avoid any quality and connection issues.

Vivitek: 3D Projector in a Small Package

Todd Cochrane spoke to Christopher Yang from Vivitek about their newest product the Qumi that uses the Pico Projector. The system can project 3D, which you can watch with active 3D glasses, or 2D up to 720P. It uses the Texas Instrument DLP processor with an HD chip set. A full projector with an LED bulb will give off from 800-1000 lumens. This projector gives off 300 lumens and has a 2500:1 contrast ratio. It is not meant to replace a full projector, it is a great travel projector. It has a VGA, HDMI Connections, USB port, micro SD Card Input and audio-out. You can connect it to a camera, smart phone or laptop. It should be available in April or May time frame for about 9.00

Laser Pico projector by Microvision

The pico projector uses thin color laser beam to project video images. It does not need to focus. It is small enough to fit in a cell phone. What kind of certification is the most helpful to becoming a home theater installer/designer?

Question by Read F: What kind of certification is the most helpful to becoming a home theater installer/designer?
I have been installing basic home theater systems for people over the last few years, however I am not certified or fully trained. I worked with Mark Levinson for a while so I picked up a lot, but I would really like to expand my business and get fully certified. What kind of license/certification will prepare me the most for home theater design and installation, and also which will give me the best business opportunities once I’ve completed my certification?

Thanks for any advice.
