A friend of mine wants to use his projector outside for the super bowl but hte weather is going to be 5 degrees will this hurt his projector?

Yes, it’s possible. Minimum operating temperature for DLP projectors seems to be around 41 degrees fahrenheit and minimum storage temperature around -4 degrees. It would be best to search for his make and model.

Now, if he gets stubborn and absolutely won’t believe you, then make sure he does a few things to lessen the risk. Keep it in the house until he’s ready to turn it on – letting it get cold then turning it on will be much more likely to damage it. Take it in the house immediately after turning it off, since allowing it to get cold outside then bringing it in will cause moisture to condense inside it – which could damage it when it’s turned back on. Last, see if he’s got a small cabinet – like a VCR or TV stand – with a recessed shelf small enough to help protect the projector from the cold and wind but large enough to let sufficient air circulate around it. If he does, make him use it.

Oh yeah, don’t let him try and keep it warm by wrapping it up in a towel blanket – it needs air to stay cool!
