Home theater systems consists of multiple speakers. Usually 3 for the front and 2 in the back, and a subwoofer. They can range from a few hundred to thousands. Most require a separate receiver for amplification and the production of the surround sound. Some come with built-in DVD players.
These always sound better than a simple sound bar, but are more complex to install and operate. For example, you need to run two long speaker wires to the back of the room.
Soundbars are for people who don’t want to deal with the installation of a 5 speaker system, but want better sound than what the TV can produce. They’re a great “in between”. Using time delay, they can produce surround sound effects, but never as good as a full home theater surround sound system.
So if you want something really simple, and you don’t want to run wires to the back of your listening area, then go with a surround bar. Some come with a subwoofer to give you better bass while others don’t. That’s your choice.

The sound is not as discreet, but the set-up is not as intrusive. Unless, you’re an audiophile, it can be acceptable and far better than the sound of the average flat screen’s regular speakers. Prices vary widely.

Sound bar is a speaker system designed to bounce the sound off the walls to simulate surround sound
A Home Theater is designed to use 6 to 8 separate speakers around the room.
An HT will sound better but it requires lots of wires and careful setup. It also can have the spouse acceptance factor as a problem.
