I want to buy a samsung home theater system, but I don’t know what the wireless receiver does.

the wireless receiver is for the two speakers that are designated as rear left, rear right. the speakers get plugged into the receiver and placed in the back of the room (or near where you sit) the receiver gets plugged into the wall (wireless doesn’t mean powerless). the point is so that you don’t have to run speaker wire from the front of the room all the way to the back where you’re located.
There are two parts, the receiver,… again going in the back of the room, it receives a signal sent through the air (hence the term wireless) from the main unit where all the other speakers get plugged into.
hope this helps, overall the samsung line of home theater systems are affordable, not necessarily the best quality. they are way better than any speaker built into a TV, especially the new flat panels.

It is usually so you can have your back speakers placed and working without any wires going to the receiver.
