Q&A: how often does a dlp projection bulb realistically last?
Question by bjmarchini: how often does a dlp projection bulb realistically last?
I am looking at picking up an InFocus iN72 dlp home theater projector. Man the bulbs cost close to 400. I found one place that has them for 275.
It is rated 3000 hours with a 6 month warranty. My dad’s rear projection lasted about 2 1/2 years. Should I expect the same.
I have read a few horror stories where people had their’s burn out after just a few months. I am buying it for a xmas present so we won’t really be using it til then so I would only have about 2 months of warrant left.
I also looked at the BenQ, Optoma and Epson, but the reviews I have read place the iN72 highest for what i am looking for. plus it has two digital inputs ( 1hdmi, 1dvi) and also a hd component input for my Wii.

All I can say is that I’ve had my 3 pj’s for almost 2 years and the only lamp I had to replace so far was the one in the Den which is our main TV and is on most day and night. Luckily it was the Epson which only cost me $ 135.

Bulbs really are a crap shoot.
Most people get the nominal life out of them.
Some people get unlucky and pop them much more quickly. Check Ebay because I’ve recently discovered some good prices there for bulbs.
Make sure you keep the pj cooled as best you can while its running and that it gets cooled down properly after use. Make sure the pj gets the required voltage so there’s no undue strain on the bulb. That’s about as much as you can to do maximize the bulb’s longevity.
