How to learn about home theater acoustics?
Question by Abraxas: How to learn about home theater acoustics?
Hi,
Music is my love in life and when I get enough money I am looking going to purchase a surround sound home theater.
Now, I realize that walking into a store and paying a huge amount of money is not all there is.
You need to place certain speakers in certain areas of the room to make it sound better, you have to adjust audio levels, etc.
Does anyone know where I can learn how to do all of this, to make my sound system absolutely PERFECT?
How complicated is it to learn about acoustics?
Thank you!

Understanding small room acoustics is not too difficult. If you google it, you will get some good info.
In general, you want the room to be as “soft” acoustically as you can make it. Hard surfaces should be avoided. Carpet on the floor, drapes for the windows and soft furniture all will help. Some people even add acoustic treatment to the walls and ceiling. This website can help:

http://www.dolby.com has many tutorials for correct speaker placement.
Your local library should also have tons of books.
There is NO perfect – unless you have infinite budget.

There are lots of people that have written books and papers on various aspects of acoustic theory, now a days with the internet it is easy to do research on the subject, also a lot of the better equipment now a days have their own Algorithms built in with automatic adjustments, but still it is always a good idea in having at least a basic knowledge of what sound is doing in your room…
