also is there a special screen that would have to be purchased as well or can the images be displayed on any surface type

I have two LCDs and one DLP. For the smaller picture, go with the LCD.. but if you are going BIG, ours is 72 inch, go DLP. It looks great! But make sure it can handle the 1080p for future use.

If you’re talking about which way projectors will go in the future… DLP undoubtedly as it’s a more robust resilient technology… the LCD tends to get cooked by the levels of light that pass through them – so they are either noisy (all that cooling), dim or liable to overheat.
If you’re talking about buying one now… the important thing is how much can you get for your money… in terms of resolution, brightness and lamp life. Go with whichever technology best fits the above criteria and your budget regardless of the technology. It’ll do for a few years and then you’ll need to replace it because the resolution will be too poor or the bulb will be obsolete or some such ‘technological advancement’
